While the world comes together for the UN COP31 climate talks in Türkiye, the City of Melbourne is delivering a series of events to spark community connection, conversation and action on climate at a local level. We invite you to Arts House to explore climate futures through storytelling, culture and collective imagination.

What might a climate-safe future look like? How do we get there?

Young people aged 16–25 are invited to join artist Liv Satchell for an interactive workshop designed with Kate Sulan exploring hopeful climate futures.

While we hold the fear and grief of a world in turmoil, this workshop makes space for imagination, connection and possibility. Together, we’ll explore visions of a sustainable and thriving future, and the role we can play in creating it.

Just as science fiction once inspired journeys to the moon, we’ll use creativity and speculation to imagine futures worth striving for, and what it might take to begin building them today.

About the artists

Kate Sulan is a performance maker, dramaturge and facilitator, specialising in collaboratively devised performance. Kate has collaborated on many new works across theatre and performance working with a range of companies and artists. Kate was the founding Artistic Director of Rawcus, an award-winning ensemble of performers with diverse minds, bodies and imaginations and led the company for 22 years (2000-2022). Kate is also a long-term collaborator with Back to Back Theatre. She has worked with the company as a co-devisor, dramaturge and director. Kate was one of the team of artists working on the multiyear Refuge project at Arts House. Refuge explored the role of artists and cultural institutions in times of climate catastrophe, bringing together emergency management, artists, the community and local, regional and international partners. Kate is currently a lecturer in Theatre at the Victorian College of the Arts. She is also the chair of Theatre Network Australia. Kate has an Advanced Diploma in Group Facilitation (Groupwork Centre) and has completed mediation training ( Resolution Institute). She facilitates complex and challenging conversations with care and creativity.

Liv Satchell is a theatre maker, writer, facilitator and community organiser committed to building platforms for independent artists through her company VIMH. Her work includes Ballkids (or, scenes from a friendship), co-directed with Julian Dibley-Hall (fortyfivedownstairs and La Mama); NAYIKA: A Dancing Girl, co-created with Nithya Nagarajan (Belvoir); and The Grief Trilogy (La Mama). She has won three Green Room Awards for Outstanding Writing for Independent Theatre and was awarded the 2024 Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award and the inaugural New Writing Award, supported by Melbourne Theatre Company as part of Melbourne Fringe Festival, for Ballkids (or, scenes from a friendship). Her community work has included co-founding Small and Loud, a monthly performance program for new works in development that worked with over 300 artists across its three years of programming. Her most recent initiative, THINKING GROUND, centres the civic function of art in new idea development and has been presented in collaboration with Next Wave, Darebins Arts, and Theatre Works.

Image description: The image depicts a revitalised riverfront landscape with wetlands, native vegetation, boardwalks and stepped seating integrated into the water’s edge. People gather, walk and relax throughout the park, while kayakers paddle on the water and birds fly overhead. Melbourne’s city skyline forms the backdrop, illustrating a connection between urban and natural environments.
