About this Makeshift Workshop: THE RABBLE
THE RABBLE are renowned for radically re-imagining theatrical experiences with visually ambitious, political, feminist and formally experimental methodologies. This three-day Makeshift Workshop invites established artists and directors into THE RABBLE’s process with a chance to further their skills in the principles of design. Creators and designers Kate Davis and Emma Valente of THE RABBLE work with participants to sharpen processes towards different disciplines including sound, lighting, set, costume and installation and develop their own principles of design for performance.

Activities include:
– The opportunity to design space, sound, light for a new project;
– A chance to interrogate the dramaturgy and design of a RABBLE project;
– The opportunity to ask Emma and Kate anything about design, technology, logistics, terminology, process etc;
– Reimagining the potentials for design in performance.

Participants are asked to bring a seed idea to work on. It is preferable for this idea to be a new idea that has had little development until now. THE RABBLE will provide all other materials.

Who is it for?
This Makeshift workshop: THE RABBLE is geared towards experienced lead artists of all disciplines (directors, writers, performance makers, choreographers etc) who are interested in learning more about design (including set, costume, installation, sound and lighting) and methodologies for collaborating with designers. It is also a chance for artists to understand more about the principles of design dramaturgy.

How to Apply?
This Makeshift Workshop can support up to 10 participants. It is important that participants can commit to attend all three days. Participants are provided with a $300 stipend and lunch each day.

Lead Makeshift artists determine the application and selection process for participating artists.

About the Artists
THE RABBLE Kate Davis and Emma Valente) was formed in 2006 from a desire to make work that wasn’t being produced in Australia: visually ambitious, political, feminist and formally experimental. THE RABBLE exists as a reaction to a conservatism that dominates our stages. THE RABBLE aims to radically re-imagine theatrical experiences and to repopulate familiar stories with female voices and aesthetics. THE RABBLE points at subterranean feminist concepts in iconic stories from folklore and literature. Our productions are realised through sweeping design and intense theatricality. We have abandoned male dominated play scripts and replaced them with an improvisational methodology using poetry, prose, image, tableaus and gesture. THE RABBLE boasts an impressive performance history, having been commissioned by Melbourne Festival, Arts House, Malthouse Theatre, Belvoir Theatre, MTC, Theatre Works, The Substation, Vitalstatistix, and Dublin Fringe Festival. They have also toured to Wuzhen Festival (China), Brisbane Festival, Dark MOFO and Carriageworks.
